Esports officially recognized in India
After a referendum, the Government of India recognized Esports as an official sport. The Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is responsible for its support in the country. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will develop Online Gaming.
The main purpose of this decision is to popularize Esports in the country. According to the statements of the Director Esports Federation of India, Lokesh Suji, in the near future, it should equal the popularity of such traditional sports as cricket, football, and basketball.
