Overview of the current meta of the professional Dota 2 scene

Three months have been since the release of patch 7.29 in Dota 2. Teams have already played about 1,800 official matches. In this article, we'll compile tier lists of heroes and look at how the meta looks like at the moment.

The recent WePlay AniMajor had a great impact on the current meta. The strongest teams from all over the world brought in the best tactics, which everyone else has taken up.

TIER 1

Tier 1 features characters with at least 100 picks/bans on their account since the beginning of June. Some of the characters were used before WePlay AniMajor, but some only made the list of the strongest during the tournament.

  • Templar Assassin
  • Ancient Apparition
  • Broodmother
  • Puck
  • Mars
  • Timbersaw
  • Viper
  • Nyx Assassin
  • Ursa
  • Terrorblade

Templar Assassin takes the top line with an 81% draft rate. This is a prime example of how an unpopular hero broke into the strongest list due to WePlay AniMajor. Before the tournament, it was used very rarely.

The main reason for the hero's popularity is that teams got used to the patch and found the main winning factor - a quick kill of Roshan. The second Roshan gives Aghanim's Shard, which greatly enhances characters. Templar Assassin is one of the few who can take out Roshan quickly by reducing his armor from Meld. On WePlay AniMajor, it was used by the top mid-laners: Miracle, Abed, and NothingToSay.

The most popular support of recent weeks is Ancient Apparition. The hero is used in 79% of drafts, most of which are at the ban stage. Before WePlay AniMajor, he was rated as average support and had a low usage rate.

Teams in the Major showed the full power of the character. His key feature is the ability to be as far away from the epicenter of fights as possible. All of his abilities have a tremendous range.

The most hated hero of the pubs, and now the professional scene, is Broodmother. On the last WePlay AniMajor, she was banned 90 times and picked only 14 times.

Even with the release of patch 7.29, Chinese teams have been at full potential with the character: they used her in the second season of DPC and at i-League 2021. The rest of the regions paid attention to Broodmother closer to the Major.

Tier 2

Tier 2 features heroes have between 70 and 100 picks/bans since the beginning of June. Each of them is just as strong as the heroes on the first list, but for the most part, they require a more careful setup.

  • Faceless Void
  • Dragon knight
  • Enchantress
  • Lion
  • Spectre
  • Morphling
  • Phantom Lancer
  • Leshrac
  • Winter Wyvern
  • Phoenix

One of the most popular heroes in patch 7.27, Faceless Void, is slowly making a comeback and is already as close to Tier-1 level as possible. Since the beginning of June, he's been involved in drafts in about 60% of all matches. Most of those were bans. On WePlay AniMajor, Faceless Void has been banned 64 times and picked 20 times.

Dragon Knight has the same percentage of engagements as Faceless Void, but the hero is in the pick of one of the teams most of the time. As before, Dragon Knight's main advantages are his ease of use and his extremely strong ultimate. And due to his passive Dragon Blood ability, which gives regeneration and armor, the hero easily keeps a line even 1 vs. 2.

The most popular hero in patch 7.29, Lion, slightly lost his position after the WePlay AniMajor. Previously his draft rate was at 80%, but now it is about 55%. He's less likely to get banned and more likely to get picked. His main strength is still 2 disables — Earth Spike and Hex.

At the moment, the meta of the professional scene looks like this, but things can change. The world's strongest teams are already preparing for The International 10 and will surely come up with new effective strategies and hero combos.
