BB Team Suffer Gut-Wrenching Loss, Falcons Upset Liquid 2-0 – EWC Playoffs Day 2
Day 2 of the EWC Playoffs has been the most meaningful day of the event so far, with heartbreaks, emotions, and surprises. Both teams that topped their respective groups were eliminated from the tournament.
The BetBoom Team had a firm grasp of the series against Tundra Esports in all three maps, but managed to botch two of them, resulting in a disappointing elimination. On the first map, things were looking good with Pure’s nasty last-pick Broodmother, but 33 had to spoil the BetBoom Team’s plans by snatching the first Aegis. This Aegis snatch ruined the BetBoom Team’s early timing, and Tundra Esports managed to steal the map away.
After winning the second map convincingly, the BetBoom Team looked like they were going to pull off the reverse sweep with their sizable gold lead in the third game. However, the squad continued to show struggles in closing out games, as Bzm's Invoker and 33’s Axe played phenomenal Dota 2 to help Tundra come back into the game.
It was an emotional loss for the BetBoom Team, who came into the event as one of the favorites after their recent win at PGL Wallachia Season 5. They were in great positions in the first and third game, but couldn’t close it out. Save- even shed tears after the match.
Storylines don’t end there, as Team Falcons managed to upset Team Liquid – arguably the heaviest favorite at the Esports World Cup 2025 event. Team Falcons had an underwhelming performance throughout the group stage, but have found their form by sweeping Team Liquid with a dominant 2-0.
Team Liquid tried to be cheeky with a last-pick Windranger carry for miCKe on the first map, which turned out horribly wrong. Team Liquid could not muster any response against the Team Falcons draft that ran over them.
In the second, the two stars of Team Falcons, Malr1ne on Beastmaster and ATF on Razor had near-flawless performances, going 15/1/12 and 10/2/113, respectively. It was a shock that Team Liquid barely put up a fight in the series despite their recent form.
Now, only four teams remain. Team Spirit will take on PARIVISION in the first round of the semi-finals, while Team Falcons have a date with Tundra Esports.
The Esports World Cup 2025 is a $3,000,000 tournament taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 16 teams compete from July 8 to 19.
